Social-emotional learning

Goal: Use social-awareness and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain positive relationships.

Today’s schools are increasingly multicultural and multilingual with students from diverse social and economic backgrounds. Educators and community agencies serve students with different motivations for engaging in learning, behaving positively, and performing academically. Social and emotional learning (SEL) provides a foundation for safe and positive learning, and enhances students’ ability to succeed in school, careers, and life.

Research shows that SEL not only improves achievement by an average of 11 percentile points, but it also increases prosocial behaviours (such as kindness, sharing, and empathy), improves student attitudes toward school, and reduces depression and stress among students At IB authorized World School, Baru Sahib, we strive to inculcate positive social and emotional development. This development influences a child’s self-confidence, empathy, the ability to develop meaningful and lasting friendships and a sense of importance and value to those around him/her. Children’s social and emotional development also influences all other areas of development.

Connected and coordinated sets of activities like use of mood meter /kindness tree /anger management ladder/ anger monster, etc. are in planned and implemented to foster socio emotional skills development of the individual child Story telling sessions by the homeroom teachers are organized for kids for teaching valuable life lessons in a fun way like- honesty, respect for others, helpful, kindness etc. Circle time gives a chance to connect with little ones and have some fun while learning .It develops positive relationships between children.

Our unit of inquiry are well planned where most of the learning engagements help the children to develop their social and emotional wellbeing. Promoting social and emotional development for all students in classrooms involves teaching and modelling social and emotional skills, providing opportunities for students to practice and hone those skills, and giving students an opportunity to apply these skills in various situations. Teachers also naturally foster skills in students through their interpersonal and student-centred instructional interactions throughout the school day. Teacher practices provide students with emotional support and create opportunities for students’ voice, autonomy, and mastery experiences promote student engagement in the educational process.
